UNLABELLED Reports an error in "Are we overestimating the prevalence of depression in chronic illness using questionnaires? Meta-analytic evidence in obstructive sleep apnoea" by Shenooka Nanthakumar, Romola S. Bucks and Timothy C. Skinner (Health Psychology, 2016[May], Vol 35[5], 423-432). In the article, “Cognitive items” should read “Cognition items” in column 1, line 7 of Table 2. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2015-49649-001.) INTRODUCTION Depression is common in chronic illness, albeit prevalence can be highly variable. This variability may be a function of symptom overlap between depression and chronic illness. Using Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) as an exemplar, this meta-analysis explored whether the proportion of overlapping symptoms between OSA and depression, within different depression questionnaires, moderates prevalence estimates. METHODS A systematic search identified 13 studies meeting eligibility criteria. RESULTS Based on depression questionnaires, the prevalence of depression in OSA ranged from 8% to 68%, reflecting marked heterogeneity. Prevalence estimates based on questionnaires with greater symptom overlap between OSA and depression were higher, whereas questionnaires with a higher proportion of anhedonia symptoms were associated with lower prevalence estimates. DISCUSSION Overall, these data suggest that when using depression questionnaires to assess the prevalence of depression in OSA, questionnaires that have a lower proportion of symptom overlap between OSA and depression, as well as a higher proportion of anhedonia symptoms, reduce the likelihood of overestimating the prevalence of depression in OSA. This study has implications for other chronic illnesses with symptom overlap with depression, for example diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or heart disease, as well as suggesting that depression questionnaires are not equally appropriate for assessing depression symptomatology in chronic illness populations.

CrossTalk proposal: Metabolic syndrome causes sleep apnoea.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep disorder characterized by upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in intermittent breathing pauses despite effort, reduced blood oxygen saturation, hypoxia and arousals. With prevalence in the general population estimated at 17–24% of men and 5–9% of women (Young et al. 1993; Bixler et al. 1998, 2001), OSA has been linked to the key c...
متن کاملPrevalence, Awareness and Reporting of Symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea among Hospitalized Adult Patients in Nigeria: A Multicenter Study
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnoea is the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing in adults and children. It is associated with many adverse health consequences. The objectives this study were to determine the prevalence, awareness and reporting of symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea among hospitalized adult patients in Nigeria. METHODS This was a multicenter cross-sectional study in...

We read with interest the article by URSCHITZ et al. [1] which estimated the population prevalence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in an urban community of German third graders. This article highlights the fact that OSA is one of the most common chronic respiratory diseases in childhood and requires more attention from paediatric health services and clinicians. However, we are concerned that ...

Two main types of sleep-related breathing disorders occur in patients with congestive heart failure: obstructive sleep apnoea and Cheyne–Stokes respiration with central apnoeas. Obstructive sleep apnoea is characterized by recurring upper airway collapse with ongoing respiratory effort during sleep, causing repetitive surges of negative intrathoracic pressure, arousals, and oxygen desaturations...
متن کاملSleep apnoea in Australian men: disease burden, co-morbidities, and correlates from the Australian longitudinal study on male health
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnoea is a common disorder with under-rated clinical impact, which is increasingly being recognised as having a major bearing on global disease burden. Men are especially vulnerable and become a priority group for preventative interventions. However, there is limited information on prevalence of the condition in Australia, its co-morbidities, and potential risk fac...
